What's it like to live in Wedgwood?

With more than 5,000 homes south of I-20, Wedgwood is a big one: a master-planned midcentury neighborhood in southwest Fort Worth, built from the mid-1950s into the 1970s. Most are brick ranch houses, and most of the streets start with W.

If you want a house with a yard inside Fort Worth city limits and your budget doesn't stretch to Tanglewood, Wedgwood belongs on your list. There's a lot of variety, though. Wedgwood is big enough that one section can feel quite different from the next.

Where is Wedgwood?

The usual description puts Interstate 20 on the north, Granbury Road on the northwest, Altamesa Boulevard on the south, and McCart Avenue and Westcreek Drive on the east. (Wikipedia) Some people stretch it farther south, and there are separate neighborhood associations for different parts of it, including Wedgwood East, West, and South.

Directly north across I-20 is Foster Park, a much smaller neighborhood where most of the houses are a bit older. Hulen Mall is just northwest.

Who built Wedgwood?

E.L. Baker Sr., Irwin Krauss, and S.G. Payte formed the Wedgwood Land Company in 1954 and developed the whole area gradually over the next two decades. (Fort Worth Report)

It was planned as a full community, not just a subdivision. More than 100 builders worked here. The plan included schools, a shopping village, a bowling alley, and a country club, and it was laid out around access to Benbrook Lake and the then-new highway. The neighborhood also got Fort Worth's first branch public library. (Wedgwood Historical Association)

What kind of homes are in Wedgwood?

Mostly brick ranch homes with attached garages, in a wide range of sizes. Within that, there's more variety than people expect. The 2025 Parade of Homes, for example, featured a 1956 contemporary ranch, a 1964 international-inspired ranch, and a 1963 colonial ranch. (Fort Worth Weekly)

Many houses still have original details. Others have been gutted and flipped. If you love midcentury design, ask what's original before you assume a renovation is an improvement.

On price, Wedgwood is one of the parts of Fort Worth where larger homes are still reachable for first- and second-time buyers. I go into the numbers in How Much Income Do You Need to Buy a Home in Fort Worth, and if you're buying your first house, look at the Texas first-time buyer programs too.

Is Wedgwood becoming a historic district?

There's an effort underway. The Wedgwood Historical Association, a nonprofit formed in 2021, is working to get part of Wedgwood listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2026 it received a $21,800 Texas Historical Commission grant toward the survey and nomination. The proposed district covers about 2,200 lots bounded by Granbury Road, I-20, Vega Court, and Altamesa. (Fort Worth Report)

Here's the part buyers ask about. A National Register listing is not the same as a city historic district. The association notes that National Register listing places no restrictions on what a private owner does with their property, unless federal money or permits are involved. (Wedgwood Historical Association) As of this writing, the survey and nomination were still in progress, so nothing had been listed yet.

The association's annual Parade of Homes, usually in the fall, is a good way to see inside some of these houses.

What schools serve Wedgwood?

Wedgwood is in Fort Worth ISD, and the neighborhood was planned with schools in mind. Campuses in the area include J.T. Stevens, Bruce Shulkey, and Westcreek elementary schools and Southwest High School. (Wedgwood Historical Association) The neighborhood is big, though, and zoning depends on the address. Check any house on the district's School Finder.

What's near Wedgwood?

Places I confirmed were open in fall 2026:

  • La Casa de Lina, 5216 Wedgmont Cir N, for Mexican food inside the neighborhood
  • Ming Wok, 5346 Trail Lake Dr
  • Cousin's Bar-B-Q, 6262 McCart Ave
  • Mexican Inn Cafe, 5017 S Hulen St
  • Wedgwood Village on Trail Lake Drive, with Planet Fitness, Harbor Freight, and Sherwin-Williams (LoopNet)
  • Hulen Mall, 4800 S Hulen St
  • Benbrook Lake, a short drive southwest, with Corps of Engineers parks and boat ramps (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers)

Why people buy here, and what to watch

The appeal is space for the money. You get a decent lot with mature trees, plus I-20 access, at prices that are generally lower than the neighborhoods north of the interstate. The midcentury character is a bonus if you care about it.

What to watch: condition varies widely, and so do individual streets. These are 50-to-70-year-old houses. Foundations and old plumbing are where I'd spend inspection attention first. And I-20 is loud if you're right next to it. I'd always check the specific address on FEMA's flood map, too.

I included Wedgwood in my roundup of Fort Worth neighborhoods. It's a solid fit for buyers who want more space for the money and don't need everything brand new.
